An exhibition loan is a formal arrangement in which an artwork is temporarily lent to a gallery, museum, or venue for display purposes. Unlike a sale or consignment, a loan does not transfer ownership. The lending artist or collector typically signs a loan agreement specifying the display period, insurance responsibilities, transport arrangements, and any reproduction rights. Loans may be fee-free (particularly for public institutions) or may involve a loan fee. The work is returned to the owner at the end of the agreed period.
