Consignment is an arrangement in which an artist places their work with a gallery or retailer for sale, without transferring ownership upfront. If the work sells, the artist receives an agreed percentage of the sale price and the gallery keeps the remainder. If the work does not sell within the agreed period, it is returned to the artist. Consignment is the dominant model for gallery sales in the fine art market. On Herehood, artists retain full ownership until a buyer completes a purchase — the platform fee is deducted only at the point of sale.
